Cottage Lake Elementary PTA
WANTED: Committee Chair Positions for the 2012-13 School Year!
This past school year we've had a tremendous group of volunteers and we want to continue the momentum by filling next year's committee chair positions NOW. For anyone who plans to continue chairing the same committee, please contact Jodie Howerton informing her of your decision. Also keep in mind that we're in need of an Enrichment Class (ASAP Class) Committee Chair and we risk losing the opportunity for after school programs without one. Please contact cottagelakepta@hotmail.com with any questions about the role/commitment. Thank you, PTA Volunteers!

PTA Packets - Going Paperless
Yep, we're going to cut back. Way back. At the beginning of each school year we normally send home lots of paperwork to be filled out, from membership forms to yearbook orders, but starting this next school year we're doing it all (well, almost all) online! You will have the option to receive paper packets by requesting one, which we will print on demand (and will provide instructions for at a later date). Otherwise, you will need to sign up on our website and process all your paperwork online - it will easily take you half the time (so you should do it now!) Signing up to access the website does NOT require you to commit to the PTA in any manner, financially or otherwise, but gives you the freedom to place orders, volunteer for committees, easily track important dates on the calendar and keep you up-to-date with all that's happening at our school. We're getting the word out now so that you have plenty of time to get accustomed to the new process. Our website is where it's at!

Our meetings are efficiently run (consistently done in an hour - from 7pm-8pm) and there is free childcare available in the cafeteria, provided by YMCA. Please come see what it's about - if you haven't attended a meeting yet then April's is a great time to start!

5th and 6th Grade Math Club
5th and 6th Grade Math Club
Matt Warhol is leading the Cottage Lake Math Club this year! 5th and 6th grade parents should have received information in their students' backpacks, but following is a refresher if you need it. From Mr. Warhol:

"My philosphy is simple; I feel every child should be challenged and encouraged. As a math coach, I am here to accomplish four things:
• prepare students for math competitions
• show math can be interesting and fun
• challenge students in math
• assure each child a positive and safe experience

I expect the participants to follow these guidelines:
• show respect for and encourage others at all times
• be courteous; you are a representative of CLE
• try your best

Time:
The Math Club meets Tuesdays in C-204 from 3:35-4:30pm. The supplementary session designed to keep girls interested in math will meet Fridays in C-203 with Mrs. Griffith and me from 3:35-4:30pm. Students can attend one or both sessions. Please pack a snack for your child. You will need to make your own transportation arrangements after school and to our March 31st competition. Our first meeting is Friday, January 20th.

Volunteers:
Help for meetings and the competition is greatly appreciated. If you are interested, please let me know on the permission form [which can be obtained in the main office].

Sincerely,
Mr. Warhol (mwarhol@nsd.org)”

- Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm (End time is not exact because of Q & A's at the end)
- What: An informational night about drugs and alcohol that will have guest speakers and a panel available for questions after the presentation

This is a very important event to make the community aware of the problems associated with drugs and/or alcohol and how to help a student or friend that is having problems with one or the other or even both.

Helping Hands
Helping Hands
With the holidays approaching, it's a great time to think about our loved ones, friends and our community. For the past several years, it has been a Cottage Lake PTA tradition to provide much needed assistance for some of our Cottage Lake families. In the past were able to provide Safeway gift cards to cover Turkey dinners for over 10 families, Christmas gifts for 19 children and groceries for 8 families! Such an amazing community we have! This year we'd like to again do what we can to help those closest to our own backyards. Times are tough for a lot of families. If we all share the responsibility, we all reap the rewards. Every bit of help is appreciated. If every family at Cottage Lake sent in $10, we would have well over $2,000 to help our families who need it most!

If you are interested in helping, please send your cash or check donation to the front office, attention "PTA Helping Hands" by Monday, Nov 21st. You could also send in grocery store gift cards if you'd prefer. Any money donated will be used to provide holiday meals (in the form of grocery gift cards), as well as to purchase any left over items on the list. If there is money left after providing help in December, it will be used to help those most in need throughout the spring. Any questions or ideas can be sent to me at kzuger@windermere.com or call me at 206.930.7797. Thanks so much for doing what you can - every bit of help is truly appreciated! Kelly Zuger, Social Concerns Committee Chair.

Why should you become a member of the Cottage Lake PTA?
Why should you become a member of the Cottage Lake PTA?
The Cottage Lake PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is a volunteer run organization that aims to connect school, home, and community to help every child receive the best possible education. The PTA supports the goals of our educators and helps foster a sense of community. This includes both fundraising and advocacy. Through fundraising efforts, the PTA supplements district-approved curriculum with extra programs, materials, books, equipment etc to enhance the education of all students. Through advocacy at the local, state and national levels, PTA works to make education a top legislative priority. Everyone - parents, educators, students and other citizens active in their schools and communities - is invited to join our not-for-profit parent association.

Get Connected. There's no better way to know what's happening in your school.
Discover Great Resources. The PTA offers a variety of programs designed for parents as well as students.
Tap into a Network. PTA actions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, building rapport and discussing issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences.
Watch Yourself Grow. By volunteering with your PTA, you put your skills and hobbies to use for a noble cause - your child and all children in the community.
Speak Up. PTA can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at your child's school.
Witness Improvement. By getting involved at your child's school you'll be part of the solution, helping make positive changes. Local PTAs play an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs, and social events.
Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTA member, you'll be demonstrating to your child teh importance you place on education.

Please join the Cottage Lake PTA!
